One of the best communities on livejournal is [ profile] little_details - a place where writers can post about the niggling little research questions they need to solve, and the membership solves it for them.

I want a community like this on DW! And given the response to my journal post about it, I'm not the only one who wants it. None of us want to be the one in charge, though. :/

DW has [community profile] writerstorm, which is awesome in its own way, but is more about solving story problems and brainstorming than it is about the factual research.

What would make the DW community even *cooler* than little-details on LJ is if, as well as posting about that one thing that you only need for that one scene, people could also make posts saying "I am writing a story that heavily involves Baltimore, Baha'i, beriberi, boating, Black American culture, birding and Babylonian Mythology, and I need experts who are willing to be my fact-beta / go-to research aide / fail-check on each of those topics" and get volunteers who will to stick with you for the whole story.

Wow, I never even thought of a comm like that, but I can think of times it would have come in handy for my fics!

I've been wanting a comm like what you talk about in your last paragraph for a long time, something for finding betas with specific cultural knowledge.

I agree! And like, for privacy reasons I would probably not want to sum up all my areas of expertise (which would include all the places I've lived) in a public post under this name, plus there are a lot of little things that it probably wouldn't occur to me to list. But if I saw someone asking for help I'd be happy to volunteer.

The specific expert betas is an awesome idea.

I need another comm to admin like I need a hole in the head, but this one's tempting me. (I'd probably call it something like 'factchecking' instead of 'little_details', but still.)

Mrpgh. Stop tempting me, woman!

I don't want to step on toes and get in the way of things other people want to do, but I'd be super glad to administrate something like this with help, as said. (My biggest "omg I need help save me" issue is in adequate communication; I speak better than I write and so it's stuff like writing rules that are not so good for me. If there were a written version of Wernicke's someone would have diagnosed me with it already. I have written this comment twelve times.)

I'd offer to create/mod, but only from a love of comms like [ profile] little_details and [ profile] hp_britglish, not from any experience!

Taking a quick look, [community profile] the_2nd has only 24 members, despite being pimped in two [site community profile] dw_news posts, IIRC. I think what would really help to get a 'critical mass' of members would be for several BNF-type people to pimp it all at once, as well as to maybe ask [ profile] little_details and others for affiliate status - "If you're on DW, come on over" sort of thing.

I agree with asking LJ comms to affiliate with the DW versions. However, I think that the_2nd is maybe not the most representative example to use?

Oh, yes, sorry, I was just saying that getting a mention on the news post doesn't necessarily translate to members *is very groggy*

As a matter of interest, which are the similar comms in existence at the mo? I've got little-details, hp-britglish, and the DW writing one mentioned above - others?

Not necessarily, of course, but from my experience, well [community profile] homeeconomics101 got over 80 new subscribers from being mentioned.

The fanlore beta resources page lists a bunch alongside with fandom specific betas
There is ones for military beta, science beta, multinational beta, food in fiction... (though I haven't checked how active each of these is)

It's not a fandom resource per se, but the community [ profile] ask_a_cop is very useful.

I wonder if [community profile] dark_agenda might be willing to affiliate too. They worked on finding people betas for writing about Indian and Chinese fandoms at Yuletide.

Two days of deliberation later I am seriously seriously considering creating this comm if I can find other people to work with me; would you like to team up (and maybe find some other people)?

Yes, I'd love to team up.

I like either factchecking or factfinding (because it's not always really checking) as names – any other thoughts? Besides, like, facts, which I guess is also doable, really ...

I like [community profile] factfinding over [profile] factchecking, it includes the "How does X work?" posts as well as the "Is saying X correct?" ones. [personal profile] facts seems a little abrupt and vague, IDK.

[community profile] factfinding was my favorite, too, and my original thought I thought no one else would really like (see I am proven wrong!) – so now it exists! Though where to go from there I'm not 100% sure.
